Premier League Confirms Semi-Automated Offside Technology Launch on April 12

The Premier League has officially announced the introduction of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) on Saturday, April 12 (Match Round 32). The new system aims to enhance accuracy and efficiency in offside decisions, supporting the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the crucial title race between Arsenal and Liverpool.
How SAOT Has Been Tested in English Football
The technology was first trialed in England during the FA Cup fifth round, but only at Premier League stadiums. It was also deployed in the FA Cup quarter-finals, except for Preston North End vs. Aston Villa at Deepdale.
How Semi-Automated Offside Technology Works
SAOT automates key aspects of the offside decision-making process by:
- Enhancing VAR support for more accurate calls.
- Using optical tracking to precisely place the virtual offside line.
- Generating virtual graphics for a clearer in-stadium and broadcast experience.
A Premier League spokesperson stated:
"Semi-automated offside technology will improve the accuracy and efficiency of offside decisions, ensuring a fairer experience for teams and fans alike."
