Arsenal Thrash Liverpool to Keep Women's Super League Title Hopes Alive

Arsenal delivered a dominant 4-0 victory over Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, keeping their slim Women's Super League (WSL) title hopes alive. With Chelsea set to face Manchester City on Sunday, the Gunners moved within five points of the league leaders, piling on the pressure ahead of a crucial title-race clash.

Arsenal Bounce Back in Style

  • After a 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-final first leg, Arsenal responded emphatically, showing their attacking prowess.

  • Caitlin Foord opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark, capitalizing on Liverpool's failure to clear a corner.

  • Jasmine Matthews’ own goal doubled the lead within two minutes after a dangerous cutback from Kim Little.

  • Mariona Caldentey made it three before halftime with a stunning left-footed strike past Rachael Laws.

  • The rout was completed in the 69th minute, when Matthews turned the ball into her own net for a second time, this time from Beth Mead's cross.

Gunners Dominate as Liverpool Struggle

Arsenal had multiple chances to extend their lead, with Frida Maanum hitting the woodwork twice and Leah Williamson and Alessia Russo also coming close.

Meanwhile, Liverpool struggled to gain momentum, with manager Amber Whiteley’s side unable to cope with Arsenal's relentless attacking play.

Foord: "We Had a Point to Prove"

After the match, Foord spoke to Sky Sports, highlighting Arsenal's determination to bounce back:

"It has been a heavy week, but we had a point to prove after the loss. We wanted to put on a show."

"As a front four, we aimed to be fluid and make it difficult for defenders. We knew if we started fast, we could break them down early."

Title Race Heats Up: Arsenal Watching Chelsea vs. Man City

With Arsenal now five points behind Chelsea, all eyes turn to the Joie Stadium on Sunday, where Manchester City could do them a favour by halting Chelsea’s momentum.
